Not necessarily. It will not support older HDTV formats very well if at all. It will support HDMI monitor formats and smart TV's such as Samsung @ 4K

If your TV has a HDMI port, you can attach a HDMI cord to the TV and the other end to this adapter. Then you can plug this into your device with a USB-C port (like the new iPad or new Android phones).
