Yes, there are heating elements above and below. Rack should be in the center slot for even toasting. The air circulation does make the toast pretty dry so I usually select a lighter toast.

Since I am a celiac, I have to eat gluten free bread. This type of bread is normally a little harder to toast in a toaster. In my fryer I use the setting 1 slice an 2 for time. This 2 means about 5 min for frig. cold bread. My bread is toasted but not brown, perfect. If I use a 1 and 3 setting the bread in brown but dried out.
