The whole idea of the basket is to allow the heated air to flow all around the food, if you used the baking sheet the air would not flow thru the baking sheet. Not allowing the food to get proper air flow. If you were going to use the baking sheet you would not need to also use the basket. The baking sheet is for baking and the basket is to be used for air frying. hope this helps.

You can use the basket without the baking sheet. Be sure to use the "crumb" tray to catch anything that might fall (e.g., oil, if you are cooking meat).
