“In putting this stand together, can the vertical dividers that cut the shelves in half be omitted? Obviously they cut down on the number of accessories that you can put on the shelves, but I'm no sure if they are structural. Thanks.”

They can be omitted during construction if you choose. Although this is probably OK IMO since it is a very sturdy console, keep in mind that the manufacturer intended those to be structural supports.

It will help with weight distribution, I have seen shelves without them bow in the middle of the stand. I have a dish receiver and a Nintendo wii on one side and a playstation 2 and a obox 360 on the other side. then have all of my dvds and video games on the bottom shelf.
