“I live 7 miles from most of the broadcast towers. I read that an amplified signal might actually hurt reception from towers that are close. Is that true? If that is true can I turn off the amplification on this antenna? Thanks”

• Yes you can overpower your signal strength being that close to the transmission towers. You should probably try hooking it up without the amplifier first, so yes you can turn it off by just not installing the amplifier.
