I had the same problem. Mouse was working. Since I had to make a presentation next day, I decided to change the batteries, After putting new batteries, it would not work, I took it to Best Buy and Geek squad refused to assist  because I did not buy warranty. 
After a lot of diagnostic, I figured out why. The bottom battery holder negative terminal wasn't making proper connection, With the help of long nose needle pliers and a small screw driver, I was able to pull negative terminal forward to make better connection.  IT WORKED !
