It does need wi-fi, otherwise the app doesn't work. complete pain to connect it.

I believe it CAN operate without, but you’d be paying more for features you won’t use. That said, at clearance price, it’s still a top pick by Consumer Reports (as a mop - the dry vacuum capability was not considered for the rankings).
