Works with existing. I put 2 SIM cards in mine.. 2 phone numbers and just needed to call Verizon to re-sync with my existing sim cards

I have always done a SIM transfer into the new phone. Although, occasionally it is good to upgrade to a new SIM card, hence the reason you should back up all of your information from your phone.
