No you don't "need" a subscription. You can plug a thumb drive into your hub to review your camera activity. If you want to watch a video of any camera while you are away from home; you can't without a subscription. The subscription stores all video clips in a cloud and can be accessed any time and anywhere. Without a subscription you will have to use a thumbdrive to store the videos and then remove the thumbdrive from the hub after you return home and plug it into a computer to review any video activity. My free cloud trial expired 2 days ago. The cameras still detect movement but leave a blank video window on my app. Cloud was free until about a year ago. Blink went from free to $3 per camera each month or $10 unlimited cameras per month. I will probably subscribe. If I am notified of movement when away from home, I want to see what it is right away and not wait till I return and plug a thumbdrive in the computer, hours or maybe days later. Hope that helps.
