That's why it has dual SIM. You buy a SIM in South Africa and stick it in the phone. You do not have to remove or turn off your US SIM. It lets you select which SIM you want to use when you send a message or make a call. Very nice feature of the phone. Right now I have a 2nd SIM card inside that I used while in Madagascar! I'm sure if you want to order an international SIM card in the US you can look up one that works well in South Africa. I think T Mobile even sells the international SIM cards. Ask them in the store!

Yes this phone works on any GSM service overseas as far as I know. I bought 3 of them for relatives. 
I the USA It works with gsm networks like AT&T and cricket.
