No, not necessary! Unpack, plug and play. Very user friendly, no curveballs. I used the set up guide to get started and was off and running without hangups.

Thank you for your question! You do not need to use the Blueair app to operate the Blue Pure 311i Max. The air purifier has a simple, two-button control panel on the unit itself. You can use the On/Standby button to power the purifier on or off, and use the Fan Speed button to switch between modes and adjust the airflow. The purifier offers four fan speeds—with Night Mode being the quietest setting and Speed 3 being the highest.

Hello,
       No you don't need to use the app if you're just turning it on and off.  I just push the button on the top to use.  The app is good to see the condition of the filters.  And that's important if you want your air clean.
