Is cable or satellite service required? null

Tivo does not work with satellite providers and works with a HD antenna or a cable service.

Tivo Bolt does not work with Satellite. You can use Tivo Bolt with Cable or an Antenna to pull in over the air channels. If you want to just use an antenna I would suggest you get a TIVO OTA which may cost a bit more upfront but it has no monthly service charge.

it works with over the air television and cable but you should check with your cable provider on what you need before getting it so you know what to get
