It is good to be back on Tivo

We had an earlier series model years ago, but then canceled our cable and thus didn't need it anymore. We love being back on Tivo and we're excited about all of the new features we found. It literally replaced 4 remote controls and made it almost unnecessary to have a smart TV. I say "almost" because on thing is definitely missing that would have gotten the Tivo Bolt all 5 stars: A Web browser! Why would you make such a great electronic device and not include the ubiquitous way that everyone on Earth is connected?

I was trying to reduce cost with my cable DVR, so i got this and love it very much, the cable card you need i was able to get for FREE from my cable company as its free if its your primary source of the cable ( i turned my old box in ) and the tivo serivce is $15 a month so its saving me about 30$ a month works like my cable DVR and still allows me to access ON demand and other streaming services.

Best DVR for Cable and Streaming

The Tivo Bolt stands on its own. Compared to Cable co. DVRs ....well there is no comparison. Where most cable boxes are tuners with bolted on DVR Functionality, the Tivo is a far superior DVR that has cable box functionality. The best part is that it also is a very good streaming box and its 100% integrated. You can even record streaming channels. Its not quite an Apple TV or Roku from a streaming channel selection standpoint, but NetFlix and Amazon are there and thats what most people use. The Skip (commercials) mode function is incredible and worth the price alone. The DVR is snappy fast and 4K works great,. Best of all Tivo customer service is awesome - ask a question online, get and answer usually right away. The downside of the Bolt is you pay a fee for the service, but its still less than the rental of a cable box, and the warranty is extended for as long as you pay the service. I did not use an HDTV antenna, but the cable card install was so simple- but that depends on the cable company as well. The only other downside is that many of the advanced functions you will want over time have to be manually setup rather than the initial setup, but watch a few videos and its easy.

I am a 16 year owner of Tivo systems. I just purchased my Tivo Bolt to get access to some of the newer features. The first thing you will notice about the Bolt is the size it is small maybe a little less then 2/3 the size of my Tivo Premier. I love that it fits right in my tv stand. Hooking it up was no problem I am on the east coast and use Comcast so I just moved my tuner card from my older Tivo to the Bolt and when though TVIO set up I did not have to do the set up for the turner card. Once up and running I had to wait about 2 hours and I was able to go online and transfer my Tivo program record list from my old unit to the Bolt. I could have transferred any recordings I wanted also. I now have just the bolt running and I love it. One thing I love the best is when you watch a recorded show from a major station (abc cbs nbc etc..) as soon as a commercial break comes you hear a ding. That ding tells you if you press the green button "D" you skip all commercials and you are back to your show.

TiVo continues to make the best DVR on the market. It allows you to stream all channels and recordings both in and out of home. It also lets you watch every show in every room with a Mini or other DVRs. It does require a service plan, but it's still hundreds of dollars cheaper than renting the boxes from the cable company monthly. These are great boxes.

Houston TX has 109 Channels over the air. (Including Starz, Showtime and The Movie Channel But those require a different box and subscription)
I was on DirecTV and paying $160+ for hundreds of channels. I watched VERY few. The movie channels have played each movie so many times, I have them memorized. So I just basically watched LOCAL TV.
This device is FAST! Zipping through menus, forward and reverse as well as skipping back and forth are almost instantaneous! Plus it has PLEX, YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime and the 4K on those works GREAT on my Samsung 4K. And Clear!
I live in Galveston and use a mediocre antenna and everything comes in perfect. (PBS, CBS and ABC in Houston uses VHF, so make sure, if you are in the Houston Viewing area, you have something OTHER THAN a flat Digital Antenna, as you will not receive those. (All other channels in Houston use UHF (Including NBC)
This will also take into account, series that you watch and can, if available, download prior shows that you may have missed.
COMMERCIAL skip, is just that, It skips commercials! When you hear a CHIME when a POPULAR show (Like Ellen or prime time TV), you hit the D button and it will immediately start off where the commercials end. Not skip (30 seconds) skip (30 seconds) skip (30 seconds) etc... just D and BAM! show going again.
Can't say enough about this. It DOES have a Cable Card slot, but the whole point of ME getting this was Cable Cutting. But it should be EXTREMELY money saving if you return your Cable device and get a card for this.
Laters!

Super small and light. Very easy to set up (though it does take over an hour to download data and updates, like all TiVos). Shape doesn't bother me at all - it stacks perfectly well so long as it is the top item. Interface is fast and easy to use. Future proof (as much as possible) with the 4k feature. For me, 4 tuners is plenty - get the newer 6 tuner model in black if you need that many.

The Bolt is incredible. It is fast, and has many great features. I am a recent cord cutter and wanted to still have DVD capabilities. I was nervous to cut the cord thinking I would have less than stellar experiences. Boy was I pleasantly surprised. It is everything they advertise it to be. It has a great feature that allows you to skip all the commercials when you are in DVR mode. Better than anything my satellite DVR did. I have had it a month and it works perfectly and is very easy to set up. I know cord cutting would have been much harder without it. I save 90 bucks a month not having my satellite and my one time up front cost was worth it! The layout is very eye appealing and the service works perfectly. My only regret is not doing it sooner

So after years of dealing with Comcast awful equipment I decided to tryout TiVo and the difference is amazing.
Pros: better interface, better performance, 4K, remote doesn't need direct sight so can be behind cabinet, suggestions, no constant device reboots, skip commercials, no box fees from comcast
Cons: yearly subscription

This bolt is great for antenna users. The interface is fast and easy to use. Having netflix built in is a great plus as well. Easy to set up. Worst part is having to have subscription plan.

I should have purchased a TiVo Bolt as soon as they came on the market. Yes, the initial cost is a sizable investment, but over time I paid a heck of a lot more to my old cable company in DVR rental. The TiVo Bolt is easy to program and use and I did subscribe to their TV guide service. I found that when I scheduled a program to record, it would give me the option to find programming from the beginning of the series or just the current season or just the new programs. Very pleased so far.

I decided to make the switch from DirecTV to cable and wanted to have DVR capabilities in multiple rooms. Using the cable company's equipment would have included additional monthly equipment charges, so I decided to give TiVO a try. Setting up the Cable Card was a test of patience because there aren't many people at Time Warner Cable with Cable Card experience so it took almost a week of phone calls and in-house service calls before I was finally able to speak with someone that knew what they were doing. Once set up, the TiVO Bolt is a great device and has all the functionality I'm looking for. It's a very small and light device compared to other DVR boxes and much more stylish. My only complaints about the TiVO Bolt are the guide and search features. The guide has a very limited view and doesn't give you a full screen of what's on multiple channels at the same time. I shows you one channel at a time and all the shows that are upcoming on that channel. Searching for televised events for your favorite sports teams doesn't have great results either. It's hard to explain, but if you search for Ohio State football you get a listing of a bunch of nonsense shows that might be related to football.

First time Tivo buyer. Great product that comes with numerous built in streaming apps. The DVR function was the main feature I was looking for. Features skip mode for those who don't like viewing commercials while watching recorded programs. Also has quick play where you can watch recordings at 30% faster time with adjusted audio. Some issues with set up that were a result of cable card problems but finally got that resolved.
