• Yes, there is an indicator on the filter. How often depends on how much it is needed to remove the Ethylene. Approximately 6 months.

• Yes the Fresh Protect needs replaced or you could opt to not use it. It is a stick on container that pops open to change the filter. Not sure how often or cost..google it.
