When you use them on a plane without the cancellation, you can hear the plane, however as soon as you turn them on, the noise goes away. Hope this helps.

Noise isolation is passive and refers to the noise isolation of the earpads. Bose mades earphones (not headphones) that are noise isolating, called the SoundTrue Ultras. They are not battery operated but reduce the amount of ambient noise entering the earphones.
