There are different levels of noise cancelling. double-tap the left ear bud and it can change from ambient to quiet, and if you install the app on your device you can setup other profiles with levels of noise cancelling. I have tried several headphones specifically for noise cancelling, and these have been the best, even better that my set of 'over the ears' headphones.
