By design the default single earbud is the right one only, which also has the phone mike. But if you can put up with only 20 minutes of playing; the right earbud can remain in its case with either lid open, or the right earbud can be out, (and kept in range) but in 20 minutes it will enter the standby mode. Keeping the right bud active is out of case but near it.(still 20 minutes only) Another tested noted that he didn’t have any drop-out reception problems at all. (No phone in left earbud.

You can use the right earbud on its own. This is the primary earbud.
