It won't operate unless it's plugged in since it is NOT battery operated. It doesn't NEED to be left plugged in -- unless you want to see the nice digital clock when the unit is turned off. You CAN unplug it when you're not using the 500, I guess, but then you would have to plug it back in when you want to use it. But why would you want to unplug it?
