It won't operate unless it's plugged in since it is NOT battery operated. It doesn't NEED to be left plugged in -- unless you want to see the nice digital clock when the unit is turned off. You CAN unplug it when you're not using the 500, I guess, but then you would have to plug it back in when you want to use it. But why would you want to unplug it?

Yes, the Home Speaker 500 does need to be plugged in to power. It is not battery powered.
