“Even in dialog mode my mother (who wears in the ear hearing aids) can't understand what is said on Sony flatscreen tv. Any advice on improving clarity or selection of compatable headphones? Headphones would have to really help & not press on the ear.”

I don't know about earphones; but the sound on large flat screens is not good. When I heard the sound bar in Best Buy; I knew we had to have it. My husband is very hard of hearing.(no hearing aids). Maybe take your mom to your local Best Buy so she can listen to it to see if it helps her. They had one set up in the store we shop at.
