“Nothin seems to happen when I press the Bass button then press + on volume other than it turns up the volume. I used the optical cable. When I press the Base button two white dots appear on the front then one disappears - no clue what the lights mean.”

Is in the instructions. When you press the Bass button you will see two lights flashing, that means the intensity of the bass. When they are blinking you can press the + or - from the volume to increase or decrease the bass on the soundbar, also you'll see that the lights get more intensity or disappear depending on what you do with the + or - buttons.
