“I have a Sony 2019 tv - can I connect the optical plug from Bose to the Sony and mute speakers on the tv? I am trying to avoid having to reprogram my Directv. remote and use the Bose remote for sound and the directv remote for all other functions.”

We bought the soundbar to replace a tv's internal speakers that are no longer working. We changed the setting on the tv to external speaker to use the soundbar and it is working fine. We programmed the Bose remote to use for most functions with cable but you should be able to use the two remotes as standalone.

When connected via an optical cable, most TV's will automatically detect the output and play audio this way, and mute the internal speakers. If not, you can go and change this output from the TV settings. The control of this volume would be done through either the Bose remote or your DirectTV remote. Depending on what your TV model/remote is, this may need to be setup first to control the volume of the Soundbar.
