I bought a bluetooth transmitter (ABCD54F - not from Best Buy). It came with a couple different cables. I used the optical cable, connected it to the DirectTV box. Powered up the transmitter and paired it with some Bose Soundlink II earphones (From Best Buy). This configuration of connecting to the DirectTV box for sound allows for both the use of earphones and TV speaker volume at the same time. They work independently of each other, earphones as loud as you want, TV speakers as soft as you want. It was THE solution for my hard of hearing dad. Now my stepmom (and anyone else) can listen to the TV in the room at a comfortable volume level while my dad listens on his earphones. They are both very happy with the solution.
