Compared to the SoundLink Color, the SoundLink Mini will provide a bigger and fuller performance, with better bass response. The SoundLink III can be played much louder and overall is our best performing Bluetooth speaker. You may want to take a listen to them in-store to compare them and find which is best for you. I tried both next to each other in the store. The sound is just a little better with the mini, especially the high frequency sounds like high note violin, symbols, piano, and such. The biggest difference is the size! the mini is about half the size of the color. that is the main reason I chose it.

Its way better than the colors, because of the bass the mini can hold. Volume wise is better too, I think its a well packaged speaker for the size.

Step-down from the Soundlink? That is a bit more complex, short answer is YES! Long version, you have better volume and cleaner highs plus way more bass in the Soundlink. You do loose some portability and more weight to carry around. It depends on your main purpose, for Sound quality the Soundlink hands down the best. For travel, camping, pool, beach, etc. the Mini is the better choice. The Mini has a little more battery life.

If you want sound quality and don't care that much about portability, also consider the Harman Kardon Onyx.

My roommate has the mini-soundlink and I have the color. There is absolutely no noticeable difference. I don't think the mini-soundlink is worth the extra money.
