I've found them to be very effective with noise reduction. This was a major consideration with my purchase of headphones vs. any other portable headset device. This particular style of Bose headphones are exceptionally comfortable, too.

They are designed for comfort and audio performance, though will not block out much engine noise from an airplane. Our QuietComfort 15's are our around-ear style headphones with active noise cancellation which would perform very well for that application. Thanks for your question.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.They do cancel enough noise to minimize exterior sounds, but not enough to block out all sound from your world. There is another more expensive pair of bose headphones in the same series of products that does exactly that. These headphones do limit your sound to just a low tone that can be heard from people around you. I use mine to practice electric guitar at a high volume while people are still sleeping in a room nearby. My dog has a problem with amplified sound and he leaves me alone when i use the headphones too, so it's pretty quiet.

However, if you take them of you can hear the music quite well. I had headphones before that were noise canceling even when I took them of since you could just put the two ear pieces against each other. But these headphones are way more comfortable to have on for a long period of time. They are so light! And the sound is great!
