• you can use it without mounting to wall, can sit behind receiver after connections are made

• With cabling, you can always change length (some items may be sensitive to lengthy cable runs; do your homework). Not being familiar with the in-home bose prewiring, yes you can use away from wall. Not sure "current speaker wire" is. You could use barrel connectors and RCA cables in this situation.
