“When I plug Bose headphones into the Bose SoundTouch IV it only plays one side of the headphones. I have tried different headphones and it does the same thing. Is this how it's supposed to sound?”

Don't plug. Get Wireless Bluetooth Bose headphones. The days of wired components are dying, my friend, therefore the tech will die as well. (See 8-track media.)
