“When I spread the legs to form a tripod, the center shaft is too long and strikes the table. I can't find a way to slide the center shaft up. The instructions say "loosen the collar" but I can't find a collar. What am I missing?”

The center pole does push up. There is a collar at the top of the legs that you will grasp to gently push down. Simply hold the tripod with the center pole touching the table and push down on the collar, the center pole will slide and you will be able to place the three legs flat on the surface.
