“Do I have to buy special pods for the different settings such as ristretto, do I have to buy ristretto pods to use that setting or will any pod work using that setting?”

There are ristretto-specific pods, but most Nespresso pods let you do either espresso or ristretto, your choice. When you purchase pods, you just have to check. For convenience, I tend to buy pods that do both espresso/ristretto, and stock up on a few that do lungo.
