I have the brushed stainless steel Breville Paradice 9-Cup, and it has a very nice shine to it. It isn't ugly at all, in my opinion. The base is heavy, but that's good because it's a very stable work horse that doesn't bounce around when in use. I love the brushed stainless steel and have had no issues with the finish. It shines and is easy to clean. The first photo shows the shine/unit with cabinet lights on; the second shows the shine/unit with cabinet lights off. I hope this helps!
