The unit is pretty well contained so I've never had any issues with the film at all.
Maybe a very minuet amount of dust on the film, but that was it.
Only a few inches of the film are exposed within the fax unit itself. If something did happen to a section of the film, like a small hole, a small rip, or a dust build-up, you could remove the film roller assembly from fax. Then manually roll advance the roll a few inches until a nice, clean section of film is seen. Then re-install into fax machine and resume faxing and/or copying.
I've never seen the film roll disintegrate, nor decay due to age inside of the fax machine.
Not sure if a high humidity environment would cause the film to "stick together" or not.
I've used one unit in a southwestern, desert environment. Also in a Midwestern, rainy, humid environment.
Never any problems in either type of climate.
A:AnswerAs long as you can get to a clear dial tone, like from a home land-line, AND provided you have a coupler to mate up with the motel's phone jack (by either removing the end from the motel phone, or using a short phone line of your own, then it should work.
That is, provided the motel has not "hardwired" their phone and it's phone line directly into the wall.
If you can't connect thru their phone line, you might try using an online, FREE fax service.
Googling for FREE FAX SERVICE should offer up several choices.
