• I am not sure about your first question, but it does work with my iPad 2 so I'm guessing that should work with your MacBook air.

• I used the similar Brother product before and never replaced the drum but toner cartridge. The toner cartridge TN-660 costs $58, and supposed to print about 2600 pages. It's very cost effective.

• no sure about the mac, however the high yield drum only prints 2600 pages. I was used to 6000 with my last printer
