By Horizontal and Vertical - I think you are referring to Portrait direction and Landscape direction. This is not dictated by the printer itself. It is changed in the "Printer Options" within the software you are using. When you "print" there is s screen for printer options, and you can select "Portrait" ( 8.5" width and 11" height) or "Landscape" (11" width and 8.5" height). If you are using software like word processor - this should be set up in "Page Set-up" so the document is created with the correct orientation first.
