“If any color toner is empty, will it still print in Black-and-White if selected when sending a print job? I see 4 years ago, people said yes it will still print in Black, but Consumer Reports says No it won't print in this case. Maybe newer ones won't?”

You may be able to select Mono in the Printing Preferences to force the printer to use only the black toner. Search for "Print in black and white when color toner cartridges are empty mfc-l3770cdw" and the Brother support page with instructions should be at the top of the search results.
