The machine comes ready to go right out of the box. The initial toner cartridges are initial / lightly charged units and do not have the full toner capacity of replacement, new cartridges. One of the things that really motivated me to purchase this unit is that replacement-market cartridges ARE available and a small fraction of the price of the Brother originals. I immediately purchased a set of fully-charged replacement cartridges (the extended life ones) for $54 for the complete set of 4 cartridges. The cartridges were $13.50 each! The factory originals cost something like $300+ to replace, so having access to after-market toner is a real key to economical printing. Hope this helps on any decision-making! If you purchase a laser printer where the only option is factory-original or OEM units, you will be quite shocked at the price to replace the toner cartridges. Go with this Brother unit and that obstacle is out of the way and you can enjoy the output of this machine for all your printing needs.
