Yes, the scanner allows choices of how to treat the scanned output, and direct to email is an option. What I really like about this machine is that it has two scanners inside the scanner head, so it duplexes on one pass of the paper. It is so much faster and, because the paper doesn't get run through the scanner twice, there are far fewer paper jams caused by little nicks or bends in the paper going through the scanner feed. You didn't ask, but the built-in OCR also works incredibly well and pretty much nails a printed sheet into editable text, with few corrections needed from incorrectly interpreting the paper image. This is really an excellent machine.
