When I was researching it I think the average lifespan was 60,000 pages. I did purchase the extended warranty because I hope this is the last printer I have to buy as I look toward retirement. The extended warranty does not cover Geek Squad trouble shooting beyond the first level. If your problem has to be escalated you must pay. I was able to resolve mine on my own. Most importantly, My wife is happy with the printer.

All printer lifespans depend on the monthly duty cycle and following basic maintenance recommendations. I always use OEM toner and clean the corona wires for each cartridge change. I don't think that any extended warranty is needed. We have never bought any extended warranties for any of the numerous laser printers from Brother that we have owned at our school. Just be sure to change the WSD port to a TCP/IP port and you won't have trouble with it not waking from a deep sleep.
