Hi Tess! There does need to be a bit of a space between the protrusion of the cabinets and the doors of the unit to allow them to open properly. As for installing this unit underneath a cooktop, we are not finding information within the installation instructions that cover that. They do cover installing this unit below a microwave or above a warming drawer though.
