We have this wireless connected to laptops, tablets, phones and my desktop. I have the app on my phone from a previous printer but I didn't need it on my other devices. I just searched for the printer through settings. I'm not too sure if the kids tablets are connected through the app though. It pulls from the color cartridge when black is almost out so I'd assume it would the other way around...? Not too sure on that one, but you can just tell it to print in B&W.
