I just bought mine and once the computer and printer were on I plugged in the USB cable from my desktop to the printer. The computer saw it and went through all the steps to install it. It took quite some time but worked great.

You then have to add the printer into your list of printers to choose from. This all could be handled for you easily if you still have the disk that the printer came with. If not, the above youtube link should be helpful.

However, I believe it came with a USB cable and you would be able to plug in the cable on the left side of the printer (as you're facing it) into the USB port on your computer. I'm not sure about this, but try it. Have you gone to Canon's website to check on the specifications of this printer? You should do that. I didn't because, again, I wanted a wireless printer.
