There are two black ink cartridges - one only for documents (the big black), and the other only for pictures. WARNING: if the printer says an ink cartridge is low, pause printing and then replace the cartridge(s). You can soon damage your print head if you continue to "print" with an empty cartridge (overheats!). If you don't have a replacement cartridge, you can select to print with only the Big black cartridge, or print with all the smaller cartridges. Use you application's "Printing preferences", "Page Setup" tab, "Print Options..." button, "Print With:" drop down box, select "All Except PGBK (Black)" or "Only PGBK (Black)". Remember to change this back to "All Colors (Default)" after you put in new cartridges. This is a relatively easy transition... but at least it is possible...
