• It can actually scan either way, by placing your document into the feeder tray or by placing it on the bed.

• Kind of both. It is a flatbed scanner that will also use the document feeder on top. I used it as a flatbed scanner for some old documents and pictures that I didn't want bent going through the document feeder. Then I used the document feeder for a 15 page report I needed to scan in.
