“Will this printer work if color cartridges are low and new black cartridge is replaced? I don’t use color print very often so don’t want to have to replace all cartridges if only black needs replacing.”

You can replace only the cartridge that is out and it should work as long as the others still have adequate ink. However I have this printer and it gives me a false "out of ink" message even after replacing with new full cartridge. So Beware.
