As far as using different cartridges, I don't have a clue. But thanks for your question as so far I haven't been able to make my brand new Canon printer work yet. My printer is an 8320, so it's not the same model. I've tried many different times and ways but the software always locks up. So It looks like I'll be returning mine shortly.
