An external mic is not a requirement, however, since this has the capability for using an external mic, I would recommend getting one. They can attach to the shoe mount on top and a shotgun mic such as a Rode shotgun mic will give you a much better audio quality than the tiny little mic capsules built into the camera--especially if you are shooting any video where the audio quality is as crucial as the video quality.
