Yes, external mic gives you far better audio recording with a video and reduces/eliminates noise from camera.

If you use the camera's internal microphone you will hear a low motor sound as you zoom in/out and will generally pick up all sounds at a fairly good distance. Using the external mic will automatically disable the camera's internal mic. If you use an external microphone you are limited and tethered to the length of the microphone's wire between you/camera and the subject and probably get better sound quality closer to the subject. Any decent external microphone using a 3.5 diameter pin will work. I recommend you download the Canon's SX60 User Guide which provides much more detailed user information than the printed manual that comes with the camera.
