Actually, yes. I wondered the same, but it's been great.

Yes it protects to a certain extent.

I drop mine quite a bit. Has kept it fairly protected. This is a pretty heavy case, adds some weight to your phone which may aid in protecting it. The toggle buttons on the sides have gone flying/missing from drops though. That and the clear bumper discoloration are my only complaints.
