It does cover the situation you envision. It is able to sense openings and closings, both manual and through the system. And if you tell the app to send push notifications it does so even for manual commands.

Yes, there is a sensor that goes on the door and know whether the door is physically open or closed.

I'm afraid not. I just set mine up, and if there are any glitches, you seem to have to go inside and shut the garage door to reset it. It seems to frequently get confused as to whether the door is open or closed.

It uses a tilt sensor mounted to the top door panel to determine if the door is open or closed.
