I can only guess that your unit is malfunctioning. The timer is mechanical and runs the moment you set it.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You must have a defective unit. The timer is really basic, like an old wind up timer and maybe the spring is damaged. I just set mine for 20 minutes and it worked just fine. I got a "ding" when it finished and the lights went out.
