“Do I have to use this range extender for my Ring doorbell 2 or can I just buy a Netgear extender instead? I am not interested in having the chime for a doorbell. I am happy with my mechanical one.”

No you don't have to get this for a wifi extender

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I installed it for my friend. Mechanical bell still works. The chime one is used to alert you when something is in the ring cameras view. Like a warning system. Rings with you bell also. Has more tones you can set. We put it near the front door, set to do barking. Someone will think you have a guard dog! Great feature for when you are not home! Or, on vacation! Scare them, and ring will capture them, & send the image to your cellphone! Worked fine off the WI-FI, didn't need an extender. Move the modem to a better location!
