The doorbell is a definite plus if there is anyone else at the home where the Ring system is installed, otherwise it will only ring to the phone that has the app installed on it. Plus it helps with the wi-fi signal to reach where the doorbell is installed.

The chime sets up its own network with ring products that you have and provides an audible notification when one of those products has an alert. If your phone or other device that you use to monitor happens to be turned off, you will still know of ring product alerts with the chime. The chime pro also acts as a Wi-Fi extender for your ring products.
